Subtitling a Video

Importing Media

Load a video, audio file, or existing subtitles into Scene Cut.

Loading a Video or Audio File

In the center of an empty project, a drop zone invites you to drag and drop a file. You can also use the menu File > Open a Video (Shift + Cmd + I).

Accepted video formats: MP4, MOV, QuickTime

Accepted audio formats: WAV, AIFF, MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG

Once the file is loaded, the video appears in the player and the waveform is drawn on the timeline. The project is ready for subtitling.

If the video contains an audio track, it is used for the waveform. You can add an external audio source later — for example an isolated dialogue track — to work with a cleaner signal.

Importing Existing Subtitles

To work from an existing file, use the menu File > Import Subtitles.

FormatExtensionNotes
SRT.srtThe most common format, compatible with most platforms
WebVTT.vttWeb format, used for streaming
TTML.ttml, .xmlRich XML format, used in broadcast
EBU-STL.stlEuropean binary format, broadcast standard

On import, Scene Cut automatically detects:

  • Italic passages (<i> tags)
  • Subtitles positioned at the top of the screen
  • Dialogues (dashes at the beginning of lines)

After importing, automatic corrections can be applied across the entire project via quick fix or the Tools menu.

Importing Scene Cuts

Scene cuts can be imported from an EDL file via the Tools > Import EDL menu. These markers appear on the timeline and allow Scene Cut to verify that no subtitle straddles a shot change.

Automatic scene cut detection is also available directly within the application — no EDL file needed.
