The interface
The subtitle list
Text editing, validation indicators, and navigation in the subtitle list.
The subtitle list occupies the right side of the interface. This is where text is entered and edited, and where validation indicators let you spot issues instantly.
Anatomy of an entry
Each subtitle in the list displays:
- The sequence number (#1, #2, #3...)
- The timecodes for in and out (IN point and OUT point)
- The text on one or two lines (L1 and L2)
- A validation indicator on the left edge, colored according to status:
- Green: fully compliant
- Blue: informational (improvement suggestion, no impact on compliance)
- Yellow: warning (a threshold is close)
- Red: critical error (a threshold is exceeded)
- The gap to the next subtitle, displayed in milliseconds between entries
Double-click the text to edit it directly. The Tab key moves from line 1 to line 2, then to the next subtitle -- letting you type quickly without leaving the keyboard.
Action bar
Edit mode (pencil icon in the toolbar, or Cmd + E) activates editing controls on each entry. Without this mode, the list shows a more compact view, suited for reviewing.
In edit mode, each entry has a compact action bar:
- Italic -- for sound indications or voice-overs
- Dialogue -- automatically adds the dialogue dash
- Position -- toggles the subtitle between the bottom and top of the screen
- Lock -- freezes the subtitle on the timeline, whether during manual moves or cascade mode
- Quick fix -- applies automatic corrections (reading speed, balance)
- AI rewrite -- requests a suggestion from the AI assistant
The AI buttons (rewrite, audit) are only active if an API key has been registered in Preferences > Artificial Intelligence. Scene Cut is compatible with several providers: Claude, GPT, Mistral, or a local model via Ollama.
Selection and navigation
- Click to select an entry
- Shift + click to select a range
- Cmd + click to add or remove an entry from the selection
- Double-click to position the playhead on the subtitle
The toolbar at the top displays a summary of the selection: entry number, error count, and character count -- or the summary for a multi-selection.
