Definitions of terms used in Scene Cut and professional subtitling.

| ATAA | Association des Traducteurs/Adaptateurs de l'Audiovisuel — French organization that defines cinema subtitling standards |
| Auto-fit | Scene Cut feature that automatically corrects text and timing when a subtitle is deselected |
| Cascade | Timeline mode where moving a subtitle automatically pushes neighboring subtitles |
| CPS | Characters per second — a measure of subtitle reading speed |
| DCP | Digital Cinema Package — distribution format for digital cinema projection |
| EBU-STL | Binary subtitle format defined by the European Broadcasting Union, used in TV broadcast |
| EDL | Edit Decision List — a file listing the edit points (shot changes) of a video |
| Gap | Time interval between the end of one subtitle and the start of the next |
| IMSC | Internet Media Subtitles and Captions — a profile of the TTML standard used by Netflix |
| L1 / L2 | Line 1 and Line 2 of a subtitle. Most standards allow a maximum of two lines |
| Snap | Automatic attraction of a subtitle edge to a nearby scene cut point |
| Minimap | Reduced overview of the entire project displayed above the timeline |
| Scene cut | The exact moment of a shot change in the video |
| Standards profile | A set of rules (max CPS, duration, gap, etc.) defining the constraints for a subtitle job |
| Pyramidal | Line balance where L1 is shorter than L2 — recommended by professional standards |
| QC | Quality Control — a report certifying the compliance of a subtitle job |
| SRT | SubRip Text — the most widely used subtitle format, in plain text |
| Timecode | Precise time reference in HH:MM:SS,mmm format (hours, minutes, seconds, milliseconds) |
| TTML | Timed Text Markup Language — an XML subtitle format used by broadcasters and platforms |
| Waveform | Visual representation of the audio signal on the timeline |
| WebVTT | Web Video Text Tracks — the standard web subtitle format (HTML5, YouTube) |
