The Project File

What a .scenecut file contains and how it preserves your work.

The .scenecut file is Scene Cut's native save format. It bundles all your work in progress into a single file, easy to save, move, or archive.

What it contains

ElementDescription
SubtitlesText, timecodes, formatting (italic, dialogue, position), locking
Standards profileATAA/Netflix settings and any customizations
Scene cutsShot change markers (imported or detected)
Video/audio referencePath to the associated media file (the video is not embedded)
Audio sourcesExternal audio tracks added to the project
Work sectionsNamed zones and their progress status
AI resultsIssues detected by the AI review and their state (active/dismissed)
Loop regionPosition and state of the playback loop
Interface stateZoom level, timeline height, playback position
NotesFree-form annotations on subtitles

What it does not contain

The project file does not contain the video or audio -- it only stores a reference (path) to the media file. This keeps the project file lightweight (a few hundred KB, even for a feature film with 2,000 subtitles).

If the video file is moved or renamed, Scene Cut will try to locate it but may ask you to find it manually. Keeping the video and the project in the same folder is the most reliable approach.

Saving

Saving is automatic -- every change is recorded as you go. An explicit Cmd + S triggers an immediate save.
