Per-Subtitle Suggestions

AI rewriting of a subtitle with compliance checking and on-demand reformulation.

The AI suggestion feature lets you request a rewrite of a single subtitle, with a specific goal. It's the tool of choice when a subtitle resists automatic correction — text too long, impossible balance, awkward phrasing.

Rewriting Modes

Several modes are available depending on the problem to solve:

ModeGoal
FixResolve standards violations (line length, reading speed, hanging words)
CondenseShorten dense dialogue to improve reading comfort
Anti-pyramidalRedistribute text so the first line is shorter than the second
SpellingCorrect only spelling, grammar, and punctuation, without changing the structure
TranslateTranslate subtitles into the project's language pack language

Translation

The translation mode translates subtitles into the language defined by the project's language pack. The source language is detected automatically from the text.

Translation is available via the menu Tools > AI Translation (Shift + Cmd + T). It works on selected subtitles, or on the entire project if nothing is selected.

Subtitles are processed in batches of 20, with context from surrounding entries to maintain consistency — pronouns, formal/informal register, character names, and narrative flow carry over between batches.

The results are presented in a review carousel: each translated subtitle is shown side by side with the original, with compliance checking against the active standards profile. Translations that exceed the character limit or reading speed are automatically condensed to fit.

Translation respects all subtitle constraints — line length, reading speed, line balance, and language-specific typography rules of the target language. A subtitle that is too dense may be condensed during translation to remain readable.

The Suggestion Window

After a few seconds of processing, a window presents the proposal:

Side-by-side comparison — the original text on the left, the proposal on the right. Differences are highlighted so you can immediately spot what changed.

Compliance check — the proposal is automatically validated against the active standards profile. A green indicator confirms the text is compliant, or orange/red alerts flag remaining issues. A suggestion that creates new errors is easily spotted before being accepted.

Three possible actions:

  • Accept — applies the proposal to the subtitle
  • Reject — closes the window without changes
  • Rephrase — ask the AI for a new proposal

Rephrasing with Instructions

If the suggestion doesn't work, the Rephrase button opens a text field to specify what's wrong: "shorter", "keep the informal tone", "make it more natural"...

The AI receives this feedback as a priority instruction and generates a new proposal that accounts for your guidance. This dialogue can be repeated until you get a satisfactory result.

The AI works with context: the 3 preceding subtitles and the 2 following ones are sent along with the current entry. This allows it to maintain consistency of tone and register within the passage.
